MATERIAL HANDLING/STORAGE SAFETY
The areas of business engaged in by OML LIMITED involving the handling and storage of materials which, if not carried out with due regard to safety are capable of resulting in accidents. In line with our HSE policy, the following minimum rules shall be strictly observed to ensure that accidents are avoided both at our premises and those of our clients.

(a)Only Materials tested and approved by reputable organization and institutions shall be purchased for use either by the company or for supply to its clients.
(b)Personnel handling materials must wear appropriate PPE to protect them from injury. Such PPE shall include, but may not be Limited to protective clothing; safety shoes, hard hats and hand gloves to protect the hands from sharp or jagged edges.
(c)Personnel engaged in manual handling shall be instructed on safe lifting techniques and will be encouraged to ask for assistance to lift heavy loads that cannot be safely lifted by one person
(d)All warehouses and storage areas shall be designated ‘Hard Hat’ areas so that minimum PPE of a hard Hat and safety shoe must be worn before entry into the area is permitted.
(e)The load bearing capacity of floors shall be determined and taken into account in all cases before storage of materials.
(f) Forklifts and cranes used shall be operated by certified and competent operators, and shall be inspected at least once a year by a competent person and the recommendation from the inspection implemented.
(g)The safe Working Load (SWL) for cranes shall be clearly marked on them no crane or forklift shall attempt to lift a load greater than its safe working load.
(h)Pallets used for storage of materials shall be of good construction, sound materials and adequate strength.
(i) Wherever practicable, load on pallets will be bounded to ensure stability.
(j) Loads stacked on pallets shall not be stacked more than four high and care will be taken to ensure that the pallets are suitable load rating and in good condition.
(k)Traffic lanes shall be clearly marked in warehouses and will be kept free of obstacles for free movement of personnel, forklifts and cranes.
(l) Warning signs shall be prominently displayed to warn personal to keep clear of suspended loads on cranes.
(m)Compatibility of materials shall be taken into account before storage such that substances with great affinity for each other will not be stored close together.
(n)Inflammable/explosive substances shall be stored in a secluded place and warning signs clearly displayed.
(o)Cylindrical articles shall wherever possible, be stored on their sides with the floor level tier properly secured to prevent movement.
(p)In the storage of bulk materials, the maximum slope of the sides (angle of repose shall be kept as low as possible to ensure stability.
FIRE SAFETY
We are fully aware of fire safety and recognize the risk and consequences of fire outbreaks. The emphasis in the fire safety shall therefore be on fire prevention without disregarding fire fighting and contingency plans/procedures. The following shall form the main thrust of the company in fire safety;
- Good housekeeping shall be carried out at all times. This shall involve any or all of the following amongst others.
- Regular Cleaning of work place.
- Adoption of appropriate storage methods. Inflammable substances shall be kept well away from ignition sources.
- Rags used in cleaning Oil/grease shall be kept in covered containers.
- Electrical power cables shall be coiled kept away from work areas and walkways.
- Electrical lines and sockets shall not be over loaded
- Fire extinguishers shall be provided and staff trained on their use in fire fighting.
- “No Smoking” Signs shall be erected at critical installations and it shall ensure that the rule is enforced.
- Permit to Work shall be obtained from the clients and the precautions stated therein strictly adhered to, where jobs are to be carried out at critical locations.
- Fire emergency procedures shall be developed and staff trained in the use of them.
- Fire drills shall be conducted on regular basis.
- A Mustering point shall be put in place at every work site and clearly marked.
- Emergency exists shall be installed in building and care taken to ensure that these are not obstructed.
MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS AND CHECKS – UPS
Prior to employment, an applicant must undergo a full medical examination by a qualified and competent physician in a recognized clinic or Hospital. He/She must be found mentally and physically fit and a medical certificate of fitness issued to him/her before the company can employ such applicant. Every employee must undergo a medical check – up at least twice a year to ascertain his state of health. Deficiencies or anomalies found must be treated immediately without delay.
FIRST AID
A fully stocked First – Aid box is kept at every all our work sites and Manned by a First Aide attendant. The doctors will regularly review the first aid treatment register:
-Provide advice on the effects of a particular job on health
-Enable Periodic or special examinations to protect the workers against hazardous substances.
-Enable undertaking of epidemical studies to determine the effects of the substances used or handled in the course of the duty on their health.
TRAINING
A trained and skilled worker is an asset to an organization. We will therefore train and retrain our employees both professionally and in CASHES matters. The aim is to acquaint workers with the work processes and the necessary skills and behavior required of them.
